She was a big momma, (Her, not me... ;-)) I would say she was about four feet long at least?
We sat there and watched her dig and dig her hole using the back fins. We let her be for awhile and decided to keep walking on in hopes to find another turtle. We weren't sure how long this whole "digging, laying, covering" process would take... we figured we had time. Well, when we came back about ten minutes later she was flicking sand with all four fins over her newly dug, freshly laid eggs! We missed the laying but were able to watch her cover her eggs and take her journey back into the dark ocean...
So amazing to be able to see this creature produce new life!! (That will be me in a few weeks! ;-)) Although, turtles will lay their eggs never to see their young again, that will NOT be the case for me!
During the 45 minutes we walked and explored the dark beach, (which was a little freaky, but we had a sky full of stars to help brighten things.) we also video taped the process. I've cut it down for everyone to enjoy!
